(boomkat) As Valet presents another highly intriguing release on the Japanese Moamoo label with a head full of psyched hiphop flavours on his remarkable debut album, including remixes from Blue Daisy and Ichiro. We know very little about the artist; his myspace states he's from Uganda, which is most likely a cute bluff, and the Moamoo website is in Japanese, but his music gladly offers all you need to know, collecting 15 relatively brief beat infusions which deftly combine the freeform wills of Sun Ra with the fluid dub loopiness of Sun Araw and cunningly dynamic beat structures reminding of Flying Lotus. It's a genuinely bewitching style he's nailed here, constantly spinning off his own axis to find new trajectories through dense thickets of FX laden jazz samples and hypnagogic ephemera, crushing digital sounds into soupy blurs like Dem Hunger one minute, before blooming into astral psych worthy of Carlos Nino the next, leaving us agape and guessing where the f*ck he's going next. The muddles subs and beatdown Detroit vibes of 'Sprng Time Again' could be a Dabrye cut soaked in live yoghurt cultures, while 'Star Crisis' feat. La Note sounds like Finnish freak folk escorted on a day trip to L.A. Damn, this is a really, really heavy album and should be highly recommended to psych-seeking fans of everything from Animal Collective to Madlib.


(Norman) This is a prime slice of alternative hip-hop in the vein of Plug Research, Dublab and maybe even Flying Lotus. This Parisian artist clearly has an ear for leftfield hip-hop beats and immerse textures combined with vocal samples. On this album he works with vocalists La Note and Zig16 and combines off-kilter beats and rhythms with gritty bass and wonky synth sounds that feel very current in the scheme of things. The tracks sometimes sound like they are about to collapse in the the best possible lazy stoned manner. There is a very raw, on the surface feel but hidden beyond that is a clear vision of sequence and flow. I like the jerky stuttering rhythms that initially feel awkward but eventually become hypnotic and head bouncing. Lots of effects on the vocals too which give them a dreamy edge. The African and reggae samples are all mangled up in there too and I'm reminded a little of stuff like Onra, Push Button Objects, Ko-wreck Technique, J Dilla, Chocolate Industries and some of the more fucked up Ninja Tune stuff etc. albeit in a far more weed smoke misty way. The album straddles the boundaries of abstract hip-hop and electronica brilliantly. Comes in a cool gold and black gatefold CD package with sweet artwork. Fine stuff!

(Subraw) Sun Raをルーツとしたエクスペリメンタル・コズミック・ビーツがまたまた[Moamoo]より！！ 日本のインディ・レーベル[Moamoo]より6月16日にリリースされる西インド諸島出身パリを拠点に活動するAs Valet(アズ・ヴァレー)のデビュー・アルバムです。同レーベルより同じ くデビューを果たしたElectric Egypt、Matthew David主宰の[Leaving]からデビューのDem Hunger、そしてシーンのアイコンRas GやFlying Lotusの新作と同様に、その焦 点はネクスト・レベルやトラック的な感覚ではなく、それぞれが自らのルーツとインスピレーションを掘り下げた独自の世界観であると感じます。その世界に常に存在する感覚はSun Raからの影響であるスピリチャルな アフロ・サイケデリアとあくなき実験であり、As Valetの場合はヒップホップのクリシェ(常套手段)は僅かに残しつつ、Electric Conversationのユニットで共に活動する女性シンガーLa Noteのボ イス、フィールド・レコーディング、サンプルをループ、コラージュ、カット・アップ、ミニマリズムなどの手法で巧みに紡ぎ上げ、若干物足りなさも感じさせるほどビートを削ったドープでアブストラクトな作品となっています。Olive Oilの レーベル[Oil Works]からデビューを果たした練馬のFlying Lotusの異名をとるIchiroとロンドンの新星ビート・メイカーBlue Daisyがリミックスで参加、LAを中心としたビートのファンは勿 論、ドローン、アンビエント、エレクトロニカが好きな方にもおススメしたいです！インディのアーティストともクロスさせ、シーンのフレッシュな面々を網羅したセンス溢れるDj Mixもまた最高ですね。Cooooooosmic ！！
